Start here: the 5 questions that stop most scams
Print this, keep it by the phone, and share it with anyone you want to protect. If you ever feel rushed to send money, run these five checks first.
Before you pay or share information with anyone who contacted you, ask:
- Is it urgent or secret? Pressure and "don't tell anyone" are the scam, not a real rule.
- Are they asking for gift cards, a wire, Zelle, or crypto? Those are the scammer's favorite, hard-to-reverse methods.
- Did they contact me first? If it reached you out of the blue, slow down. Don't use their number or link.
- Have I verified on a number I already had? Hang up and call back on the number from your card or a saved contact. For family, ask your safe word.
- Would I still do this in an hour? A real bill survives the wait. A scam falls apart.
If any answer worries you, stop and verify before you act.
